Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Polk County AmeriCorps Reads joined in collaboration for the MLK Day of National Service. Volunteers, coordinated by Polk County RSVP, read the book “Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Robin Hill School” by Margaret McNamara to Kindergarten students in six Title 1 Elementary Schools in Polk County.

Polk County AmeriCorps Reads members prepared a craft project and sorted supplies for distribution to individual classrooms. The members, utilizing the story in the book, encouraged the students to “Dream Big” and provided each child with a cutout of a child and thought bubble. Members then helped children write their dreams in the bubble and attached the bubble to the child’s cutout which the children colored any way they wished.

Polk County Schools provided a healthy snack for each child in addition to facilitating the schools’ involvement and scheduling the event.

Volunteer Polk provided each child with a copy of the book “Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Robin Hill School” by Margaret McNamara.

Polk County Commissioner Edwin Smith, a former Polk County school teacher and administrator, joined 17 volunteers on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Project - “Dream Big”.
The EngineeringAstroAvionicCyberSleuths is a Rookie team that will spend six intense weeks designing and building an original robot for the FIRST Regional Competition scheduled for March 8-10, 2012 in Orlando.

“Having our students involved in FIRST is not just about increasing educational opportunities in science and technology; but instilling well-rounded life capabilities such as self-confidence, communication and leadership,” said Mr. George Bartuska, the Team’s Coach. “jcpenney’s sponsorship represents a commitment to building the future leaders of tomorrow by making youth participation in FIRST possible.”

jcpenney’s sponsorship of 900 FIRST teams this season reinforces the company’s philanthropic goal to introduce FIRST to more schools and communities throughout the U.S. and encourage greater participation among minority and female students. jcpenney’s legacy of working with national youth organizations through its signature charity, jcpenney afterschool, helps make it possible for more students to become involved in life-enriching learning opportunities during the after school hours.

Schools, communities and government acknowledge the need to improve the country’s global economic competitiveness by increasing aptitudes in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) among America’s youth. Studies show that FIRST students are three times more likely to major in engineering in college, 10 times as likely to have an apprenticeship their freshman year, more than twice as likely to pursue a science or technology career, and nearly four times as likely to pursue a career in engineering.

About FIRST®

Accomplished inventor Dean Kamen founded FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) in 1989 to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in young people. Based in Manchester, N.H., FIRST designs accessible, innovative programs to build self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills while motivating young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology, and engineering. With support from three out of every five Fortune 500 companies and more than $14 million in college scholarships, the not-for-profit organization hosts the FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC® ) and FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC® ) for high-school students, FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL® ) for 9 to 14-year-olds, (9 to 16-year-olds outside the U.S. and Canada) and Junior FIRST® LEGO® League (Jr.FLL™) for 6 to 9-year-olds. Small with the Servant Leader in Education Award. The award is given to commend an individual for their Servant Leadership in the area of Education. This is only the second time that this specific award has been bestowed from Southeastern University. Also, students will learn to use the internet efficiently, searching various technical and educational websites for possible solutions for robot functions.”

jcpenney’s sponsorship of 900 FIRST teams this season reinforces the company’s philanthropic goal to introduce FIRST to more schools and communities throughout the U.S. and encourage greater participation among minority and female students. jcpenney’s legacy of working with national youth organizations through its signature charity, jcpenney Afterschool, helps make it possible for more students to become involved in life-enriching learning opportunities during the after school hours.

Schools, communities and government acknowledge the need to improve the country’s global economic competitiveness by increasing aptitudes in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) among America’s youth.

“Participating in FIRST provides our students an excellent opportunity to use what is learned in the classroom in a real-world, practical project and exemplifies how these skills can be used across many disciplines,” noted Wade Sumner, Mulberry High School’s Automotive Academy teacher and co-sponsor of Panther Robotics. “Studies show that FIRST students are three times more likely to major in engineering in college, 10 times as likely to have an apprenticeship their freshman year, more than twice as likely to pursue a science or technology career, and nearly four times as likely to pursue a career in engineering.”

About FIRST®

Accomplished inventor Dean Kamen founded FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) in 1989 to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in young people. This agreement was but one of many positive agreements that were reached during the negotiation process for this year’s contract. Several of these highlights include:

2011-12 Salaries – A tentative agreement was reached on a step increase retroactive to July 1, 2011 for all eligible employees represented by PEA (Teachers, Para educators and Educational Support (clerical) Personnel (ESP)). The amount of $500 will be added for employees already at the top of their respective salary schedules for these three groups.

National Board Teacher Certification – Tentatively agreed to continue to pay the $1,000 supplement for existing National Board Certified Teachers.

Teacher Training Rate of Pay – Tentatively agreed that teachers required by the Board to participate in workshops or conferences on other than a regular school day will be paid at the rate of $18.09 per hour, rather than the current rate of $8.50.

Longevity Supplements – The longevity supplements for eligible Para educator and ESP employees will be reinstated retroactive to July 1, 2011. This will provide longevity supplements for Para educators and ESP reaching the 15-year service milestone and increments of 5-years thereafter.

In acknowledgement of the tentative agreement, Polk School District Superintendent Dr. Sherrie Nickell stated:

“The PEA has been a strong and tireless advocate for its members. While ultimately successful, the negotiations were long and difficult. Key to the ultimate success of these negotiations was efforts by all parties to analyze available funding, to create transparency in the budgeting process and to make reasonable compromises accepted by each party.” Dr. Nickell noted further:

“Our foremost goal is to provide a quality education for our students, and that is not possible without high quality teachers and staff who are fairly compensated and who are treated fairly and equitably.” She added:

“This agreement on salaries is significant, and it was made possible by the ongoing cooperation of the Polk Education Association, the strong support of the members of the School Board and the hard work of the District’s negotiating team.”

Magnet, Choice Schools Change Student Selection

The Office of Magnet, Choice and Charter Schools is implementing a revised student assignment plan. The changes are due to the 2007 Supreme Court ruling that addresses the use of race as a factor in individual assignment determinations for magnet or choice schools.
