Polk County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Sherrie B. Nickell and Polk County School Board members have received the distinction of “Master Board.”  The Florida School Boards Association (FSBA) awards the distinction to Florida School Boards whose members have attended the prescribed 22 hours of training over the past year. All members of the Polk County School Board completed the requirements.

The Master Board Program, a formalized training curriculum, is designed for a school district’s leadership team. The Program provides Board Members an opportunity to discuss and develop interpersonal skill sets that enhance their ability to effectively lead as a governance group, while maintaining a focus on student learning and factors contributing to success within a school district.

The leadership curriculum provided concentrates on four pillars: (1) creating a vision; (2) developing a structure; (3) establishing an accountability system; (4) engaging in advocacy.

Training is weaved into workshop sessions that include curriculum modules such as “Roles, Responsibilities, and Relationships of the Board and the Superintendent”, “Essentials of Leadership” and “Fight the Good Fight: Creating Harmonious Relationships.”

Last week, Superintendent Dr. Sherrie B. Nickell, School Board Chair Hazel Sellers, School Board Vice-Chair Lori Cunningham, and School Board members Tim Harris and Dick Mullenax attended the FSBA Annual Spring Conference to receive a plaque commemorating the accomplishment. The event was held in Tampa, Wednesday, June 13 through Friday, June 15.

Participation in the Master Board Program is available every two years for school districts.
